Empowering women Politically, Economically & Technologically
The Mothers Movement of Sri Lanka firmly believes that in empowering women politically, economically & technologically, they will contribute to the stability & prosperity.
As per 2022 World Bank statistics women account for 51.84% of the total population of Sri Lanka. As per Sri Lanka’s Census Department women constitute 52% of the Sri Lankan population. While there is much focus on equality, women are still subject to domestic violence, economic & labor exploitation while even in the sphere of politics the role & representation of women in leadership roles is limited.
From 1931 throughout the election history of Sri Lanka & as law makers, the representation of women has never gone beyond 7%. Despite allocating 25% for women in the provincial councils, political parties have failed to fulfill this quota allocated to women. Mothers Movement aspires to lift the representation of women at political level to 30% -40%. For this purpose the Mothers Movement wishes to empower women for greater roles at political, economic & technological levels.
Sri Lanka’s labor force comprises around 33% women. The main source of external revenue comes from housemaids who contribute millions to Sri Lanka’s external reserves. In addition, women in the apparel industry are another source of income generator contributing billions. Another source of income is the plantation industry where once again women contribute to annual production & revenue. Therefore, women are a key source of income generation to Sri Lanka’s economy.
Thus, women who contribute about 50% to the national economy have not been given their due place and their representation is minimal. Mothers Movement aspires to build the bridge that enables women who contribute to the national economy to gain a role in society.
Sri Lanka’s women literacy in technology is lower than that of men. Digital literacy among Sri Lanka’s women was 57.9%, while literacy in computer knowledge of women is far less & placed at 32.6%. As a result there is inequality between men & women in this sphere & women cannot advance in digital economy as they would like to. Mother’s Movement aspires to help empower women in digital & technology & raise their capabilities.
